Youssef Antoun MAKHLOUF was born on May 8, 1828 in BKAAKAFRA (North
Lebanon) from Maronite parents. They are Antoun Zaarour MAKHLOUF and Brigitta CHIDIAC. He has two brothers: John & Beshara, and two sisters: Kawn & Wardeh.
Youssef was grown-up on Christian beliefs which made him infatuated with prayers since his childhood. He was inclined to hermit & monk kind of life, following the path of his hermit uncles who were living in solitary in the hermitage of Saint Antonius of Kozhayah, where they handed him the championship torch of virtues.

ولد يوسف أنطون مخلوف في 8 أيّار سنة ١٨٢٨ في بقاعكفرا (لبنان الشمالي) من والدَين مارونيَّين هما أنطون زعرور مخلوف وبريجيتا الشدياق. له شقيقان، حنّا وبشاره، وشقيقتان كَون وورده. تربّى يوسف تربية مسيحيّة جعلته مولعًا بالصّلاة منذ طفولته. مال إلى الحياة الرهبانيّة والنسكيّة، مقتديًا بخالَيه الحبيسَين في صومعة دير مار أنطونيوس قزحيّا، حيث تسلّم منهما مشعل بطولة الفضائل.

Youssef Antoun MAKHLOUF naquit le 8 mai 1828 à Béqaa Kafra (nord du Liban) de parents maronites, Antoun Zaarour MAKHLOUF et Brigita CHIDIAC. Il avait 2 frères Hanna et Béchara, et deux sœurs Kawn et Wardé.
Il reçut une éducation chrétienne qui lui donna la passion de la prière dès son bas âge. Il fut attiré par la vie monacale et érémitique à l’exemple de ses deux oncles maternels qui occupaient l’ermitage du couvent Saint Antoine - Qozhaya et qui lui remirent le flambeau de l’héroïsme des vertus.
